Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy” once again on 3sat

Poème de l'ExtaseThe performance of Alexander Scriabin’s “Poem of Ecstasy” by the Russian National Orchestra under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev during the Festival in 2008 was the subject of a film made by Arthur Spirk. Created especially for the event, the images were projected on a large screen in real time during the concert. Arthur Spirk, who provided a detailed commentary in the programme notes, remarked that “Scriabin attempted to evoke the process of creative ecstasy in his Poem and succeeded in writing a score filled with hypnotic power”. He added that “this production attempts to highlight this force by uniting the music with images, transforming the projector into an additional (optical) instrument in the concert”. This film can be viewed once again on 3sat on Sunday, 2 August 2009, at 12:35 o’clock.

El-Khoury Bechara: Composer in Residence 2009

Bechara El-Khoury

“Unfinished Journey”: this is the title of the work commissioned by the Menuhin Festival from French-Lebanese composer Bechara El-Khoury (born 1957) for the concert commemorating the tenth anniversary of the passing of its founding father. Written for violin and string orchestra, the composition is dedicated to Daniel Hope. “Yehudi Menuhin left us ten years ago, but his spirit continues to fill the world of music”, the composer explained. “The title of the work is derived from the title of a book by Menuhin. The music describes the passing of time by way of a meditation on memories and images of Menuhin, of his voice… and on silence. Somber harmonies, luminous, ethereal, in order to evoke important memories, supported by the song of the violin that rises to the heavens, to infinity. I think that Daniel Hope is continuing the Yehudi Menuhin’s unfinished voyage, with a new light and his own unique vision.”

Cecilia Bartoli“I am happy to bring to fruition a project together with the Menuhin Festival Gstaad that is personally very important to me: the promotion of talented young singers. Together with my mother Silvana Bazzoni Bartoli, a superb teacher and specialist for the great Italian tradition of song, we would like to teach sound vocal technique as well as the art of singing. In addition to our own experiences, we would like show the fundamental importance of the analysis of style, content and music history for a quintessential interpretation. And aside from this, I think it is simply wonderful to spend a few days in the natural beauty of Saanenland immersed in an atmosphere of music.”

Tu was“Do something!” – Daniel Hope and other artists united against political extremism

Violinist Daniel Hope, whose family was forced to flee Berlin and the Nazis, has organized a memorial concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of “Kristallnacht” on Sunday 9 November at the former departure terminal of Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport (closed since last 31 October). Conducted under the patronage of the Foreign Minister of the German Federal Republic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, this multi-genre concert unites artists and friends from many disciplines against extremist terrorism. The musicians include a number of artists who will be performing at the Menuhin Festival 2009: cellist Sol Gabetta, pianist Hélène Grimaud – as well as many “old” friends such as pianist Menahem Pressler or actor Klaus Maria Brandauer. This promises to be a unique event, the proceeds from which will be donated to the “Freya von Moltke Foundation for a New Kreisau”.

2008: 5% increase in attendance
Written by Antonin Scherrer

publikum.jpgThe 52nd edition of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad came to an end this weekend with three exceptional concerts: Viktoria Mullova performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto on Friday, Nigel Kennedy in a jazz concert on Saturday, and Cecilia Bartoli with a closing musical bouquet on Sunday. The three concerts reflect the quality and success of the “vintage 2008” festival; many critics and regular guests are of the opinion that it is the best put together by intendant Christoph Müller since his arrival in 2002. Conceived under the motto “La Joie de Vivre”, the festival saw a general increase in attendance of some 5% in comparison with the preceding year. This increase confirms the trend of steady growth over the past years and is especially gratifying to president Leonz Blunschi. “This continuity is the best sign of good health for an enterprise, much more so than sudden but ephemeral surges.” In addition to this, the noticeable increase in attendance of guests from the French-speaking regions of Switzerland is a direct consequence of the growing presence of the festival in churches in the neighboring canton of Vaud.
