Slavissimo!

Saturday evening, 27 August, in the Festival Tent in Gstaad – you truly could have thought you were in Bohemia. The Budapest Festival Orchestra was moving as a single unit under the gracious and subtle direction of Ivan Fischer: the kind of very “central European” sonorities that are ideal for sculpting Brahms (the Hungarian Dances and his Violin Concerto) and above all Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony – a programme worthy of someone like Vaclav Neuman and the Czech Philharmonic! As for soloist Nikolaj Znaider, he was brilliant, as usual, with his completely solid technique matched by great expressiveness.
