Elève (comme Iván Fischer) de Hans Swarowsky à Vienne et lauréat en 1958 du Concours international de Liverpool et de l'Académie d'été de Tanglewood, il n'est pas aujourd'hui de grand orchestre ou de scène prestigieuse où il n'ait dirigé. Il a dès lors l'esprit totalement libre pour développer les projets qui lui tiennent à cœur.
