Week 7: Emmanuel Pahud, Lionel Cottet, Louis Schwizgebel-Wang, Sol Gabetta, Zubin Mehta…
The last week – already! – of the 55th edition of the festival, this year under the signs of sun and fire. And there will still be plenty of heat for the last three events of the final weekend, beginning with a concert at the church in Saanen on Friday evening featuring star flutist Emmanuel Pahud. The programme features two Brandenburg Concertos (the third and the sixth) and the Second Orchestral Suite by the great Bach, a flute concerto attributed to Joseph Haydn but actually composed by Leopold Hofmann (!) and Mendelssohn’s sublime Octet in a version for string orchestra – all with the assistance of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra from Budapest. The following day begins with the eighth and last Matinée des Jeunes Etoiles at the chapel in Gstaad (with two young prodigies from the French-speaking region of Switzerland: cellist Lionel Cottet and pianist Louis Schwizgebel-Wang), followed by the closing heavenly concert in the tent with the fiery Sol Gabetta playing Saint-Saëns’ First Concerto in collaboration with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, who also will be performing Debussy’s “Iberia” and Tchaikowsky’s Fourth Symphony. A finale filled with fireworks… and promises of new expectations for the surprises that intendant Christoph Müller has in store for us for 2012.
