Week 1: András Schiff, Nicola Benedetti, Heinz Holliger, die Blechschaden…
Following a divine opening weekend the Menuhin Festival Gstaad begins the first of its seven weeks in 2010 with a rocket start. This evening at Vers-l’Eglise features the young (and charming!) violinist Nicola Benedetti in recital. Tomorrow in Saanen is one of pianist András Schiff’s carte blanche concerts, an evening of chamber music dedicated completely to Schumann. Thursday follows with another homage to the German composer – a choral concert with a performance of the sublime “Pilgrimage of the Rose” by the German Chamber Choir under the direction of Heinz Holliger. Another rising star has the honor on Saturday morning at the Chapel in Gstaad, pianist Jinsang Lee, the winner of the Géza Anda Competition in 2009. And in the evening brass musicians from the Munich Philharmonic (the “Blechschaden”) will be displaying their pyrotechnics at the church in Saanen, from Handel to Glenn Miller! Finally, this week of gems will close on Sunday in Gsteig with a concert featuring three young Swiss stars: violinist Julia Schröder, horn player Olivier Darbellay and pianist Oliver Schnyder.
