The fashion for Italian music in France, which came to an end with the famous “Querelle des Bouffons”, started very early on. It was due to Cardinal Mazarin, all-powerful (Italian!) minister under the regency of Anne of Austria, while Louis XIV was still a child: he was the one to invite his fellow-countryman Luigi Rossi to the Court in 1647, who previously served the Pope in Rome. All credit to him, as barely a year after his arrival, Rossi literally triumphed with his Orfeo.
